The remaining humus in the NE corner was removed and then a new plan of the trench was made to show the new conformation with stones found below the humus level, impacted in the clay layer. Elevations were taken of soil (NE cut 1.90) levels in the east corner of the trench inside the stone formation and at the highest point on the large rock sitting between the two wall ends (-1.54).
The eastern section of the cut was roped off to excavate the lower slope outside the rock formation and excavation was begun in that area. Meanwhile, the center of the formation was excavated as a separate unit.
The soil in the eastern section (Cut 2) is dark brown, clay-like soil with few small stones, hard-packed.
Inside the formation, the soil is hard-packed brown with many small stones between the larger ones. Pockets of yellow (organic?) soil appear from time
to time and are sometimes mixed with brown and possibly carbon or decomposed root. This mixed soil is slightly looser around the large rock in between the two wall ends, and the small stones are slightly larger here. Photography of trench was done.
An iron ring was found in S14, W70 at a level of -1.80 m. Close to the line between S14 and S15, W70, small stones started appearing, becoming more dense in S15.
In the SW corner of the cut inside the formation, a pocket of soft coleium was noted among the stones, ca. 10 cm in size E-W. Many of the larger rocks are broken into smaller pieces that sit together, as if broken when they fell. The darker, carbon-like soil is concentrated in the north part of S14, W71-72, near the tree and is probably decayed root rather than carbon. Slightly deeper, more calcium stones were found near the trench edge in the center of the formation (S14, W72), and in Cut 2 in S15, W70.
