Discussion of Techniques, Grid System, and Introduction

Discussion of techniques and measurements:

Depths: all depths will be measured in absolute terms as x cms. Below datum, which means below a fixed point established for the trench (see p. 15 for this point).  In addition, approximate below surface depths will be noted were possible (i.e. near baulks).  All depths will be measured with a line level and ruler.

Quantities: established procedure is to quantify amounts of pottery by milk carton (latte, latti) and amount of tile by cassette.  Measurements for each are approximately

Latte = 16 cm x 9 cm x 5 cm

Cassette = 50 cm x 34 cm x 9 cm (interior)

Amounts will be recorded as such and such a part of a latte/cassette (1/2, \xbe, etc.)

Provenance: all material will be located by meter designation and absolute depth.  Sensitive material will be located more precisely within the individual meter by measurement and drawing.  Pottery will be generally located by cut.

New Grid System:

For the 1991 season and subsequent seasons, it was decided that a modern, master grid should be established for the North Flank of Poggio Civitate. As there already existed boundry stones set into the topsoil (and previously used and noted on plans of the area), it was decided to utilize two of these stones to establish a base line and 0 point for the grid. One of these stones is conveniently located near the main forester's road leading up to Piano del Tesoro from the North West (see site Plan 9009). The second stone lies 90 meters to the Southwest bearing 262 degrees. A line of site was cleared between the two stones, and then projected to the northeast to establish the base line.

A new grid system was developed to handle the CA trenches. It was decided to utilize a cardinal/numeric designation (such as N1, E1 or S1,W1) that allows

for extension from the 0 point in any given direction. The 0 point is established at the northwest corner of the first mentioned boundry stone.*

The gridding system indicates the meter and not a corner of the meter -- for example the 4 meters around the 0 point are:
