AM The trench was cleared of branches and leaves and digging began using big pick, hand picks and trowels. There are five clusters of stumps in the trench.

Trench diagram

A datum point and a dirt dump (located a few meters W-NW of the trench) were established and opening photos and elevations were taken.

Opening elevations, locus 1

  • NW corner: 1,04 m b.d. 30,50 m AE
  • NE corner: 1,20 m b.d. 30,34 m AE
  • SE corner: 1,26 m b.d. 30,28 m AE
  • SW corner: 1,12 m b.d. 30,42 m AE

Locus 1 was declared throughout the entirety of the trench. It consists of both a thin layer of very

loose dark brown soil and the underlying more compact soil with patches of claylike texture. There are a lot of roots and the soil is rich in organic materials. The finds are few and consist of a few pieces of terracotta and a piece of a modern or medieval cover tile (special find #1). The soil in the NE corner is very compact which could be a result of the fact that the trench is partly located on a tractor path.

PM Pickpasses were made across the trench to level the surface. The only finds were pieces of terracotta (mostly ancient but also medieval/modern) and part of a rodent's jaw. The soil continues to be very dark brown.
