Work was carried out in the E140-S19 trench. The area in meters E140-141, S21-22 was excavated with handpicks and trowels. In meter E140, S21 work stopped just south of the two stones which may continue a line of foundations visible to the west of the trench (see plan p. 3). The soil was very clayey and red with incisions of plaster and carbon; this has been designated Locus 2. A piece of worked stone was recovered (#2). Work in this Locus will continue in the afternoon and pottery and tile quantities will be recorded then.
Work was also begun on the north side of the trench in meters E140-141, S19. The soil on the northwestern portion was grayish brown, Locus 3, and produced 2 fragments of tile and 1/5 of a latte of pottery and bone. The soil in the remainder od the cut was a clayey redish brown, Locus 4, and produced a small piece of bronze and 10-12 fragments of pottery and bone.

P.M.
Work continued in meters E140-141, S21-22, excavating Locus 2, the red clayey soil. In E140, S21, on the western half of the meter, a wjite layer appeared below the red clayey soil. The concentration of carbon also increaced directly above this white layer. However the layer does not seem to continue across the trench, Locus 5.
These meters produced 2/3 of a latte box of pottery and bone, some fragments with evidence of burning, and 15-20 small bits of plaster and terracotta. A small bit of bronze was also recovered. A portion of a squared imposto object was recovered (#3), unfortunetely it was badly damaged by a hand pick.
Continued yesterday's work cleaning the western baulk of R14. THis runs through meters E139-140, S25-27. This produced 1/4 of a latte box of pottery and bone and 11 fragments of tile.
