Daily Log
The day started with a pick pass on locus 3 which covers the entire trench marked by 261-263 S and 279-281 E. There was an unusually high concentration of tile/terracotta being recovered from the one meter at the north west corner of the trench with coordinates 261-262 S, 279-280 E. There was also a darker, more grey soil in that area. Locus 3 was thus cleared and sectioned off into loci 4 (the 1x1m section at 261-262 S, 279-280 E). There were 2 special finds from locus #. A bronze rivet was recovered in the wheelbarrow which had dirt from the 1x2m section (261-263 S, 279-281 E) and iron slag which was also found in the wheelbarrow from dirt coming from 261-263 S, 279-280 E portion of the trench. The material recovered from locus 3 is as follows:
Terracotta 2 latte boxes
Pottery 38 pieces, all impasto
Special Finds 1)Bronze rivet (pg.
)2) Iron Slag (p.
)Final closing depths for locus 3 are as follows:
261 S 279 E 77.6 cm b.d.
263 S 279 E 81.5 cm b.d.
261 S 281 E 79 cm b.d.
263 S 281 E 80.5 cm b.d.
center 77.4 cm b.d.
Locus 4 was designation given to the 1x1m section of the trench confined by 261-262 S, 279-280 E. This section had produced a heavier load of terracotta and pottery. It also had a darker soil with greyish color. There is a rock at the NW corner of the trench. X, Y, and Z coordinates were taken from the middle of the rock. Depth (Z) 67 cm b.d., X= 279.36 E, Y= 261.35 S. The rock was left in just in case it turned out to be part of an "architectural structure". There are also extensive root systems running through this locus (4). Opening depths for the locus are as follows:
261 S 279 E 77.6 cm b.d.
262 S 279 E 81.2 cm b.d.
261 S 280 E 77.4 cm b.d.
262 S 280 E 81.7 cm b.d.
center 78.6 cm b.d.
For now this locus will be left untouched and the
"L" shaped locus 5 will be brought down to get a window into what is going on in locus 4 and perhaps explain the higher concentration of tile. Locus 5 is the "L" shaped bounded by 262-263 S, 279-281 E and 261-262 S, 280-281 E.
Opening depths for locus 5 for the day are as follows:
263 S 279 E 81.5 cm b.d.
263 S 281 E 80.5 cm b.d.
261 S 281 E 79 cm b.d.
262 S, 280 E 77.4 cm b.d.
Locus 5 consists of a light brownish soil with extensive root systems and occasional shells. There also seems to be a higher number of rocks, but in no particular pattern. Pick passes were put into this locus. Material recovery for the day was as follows:
Terracotta 1/4 latte box
Pottery 5 pieces- 1 coarseware, 4 impasto
Closing depths for the day at locus 5:
263 S 279 E 81 cm b.d.
262 S 280 E 78.9 cm b.d.
263 S 281 E 83.2 cm b.d.
261 S 281 E 76.4 cm b.d.
