Daily Logs

30 th July 2010

Morning

Work delayed due to rain. Upon resumption baulk walls were trimmed and trench was cleaned in preparation for the declaration of Locus 2. Opening elevations of Locus 2 taken. Locus 2 consists of the area, that excludes the stumps in the S.E. corner and the N.W. corner respectively (see sketch on pg. 33 for an illustration and coordinates, with elevations). The soil in Locus 2 is yellowish and flaky, but moist as a result of overnight rain.

A pick-pass was done in the eastern meter of the trench. Some tile was recovered, as well as a high concentration (ca. 10 shards) of pottery in the north eastern-corner of the trench.

Further pick-passes continued to expose a yellow chalky soil in the eastern half of the trench. Some tile fragments and pottery were recovered in a slightly darker soil along the northern baulk wall.

Afternoon:

Picked the western half of the trench. Soil remained consistently yellow and flaky. Some small roots and stones present. No terracotta or pottery found in this area. Also picked the eastern half of the trench. Soil remained yellow and flaky. Some more pottery and tile found by the northern baulk wall, but less than in previous pick-pass. No further work in Locus 1 today.
