The new trench, designated CA40, was set up with the aid of the architect.  The area chosen for the trench lies direcly below the northwest corner of Piano del Tesoro.  A three by five meter area was gridded out for tiral excavation (see preceding page for plan).  A 10-15 cm topsoil cut was taken in meters N55-56/E132-134.  The soil in the cut was dark grey-brown in color and contained many small rocks and roots.  Very little material was recovered in the topsoil.  Only one-quarter of a cassetta of small pieces of worn tile were found.
