The northern baulk of the trench in meter N6/E47 and the western half of meter N6/E48 and the eastern baulk of the trench in the western half of meters N5-6/E48 were swept and drawn.
Work continues in clearin gamong and around the rocks uncovered yesterday afternoon in meters N3-4/E47-48. Clearing revealed the majority of rocks to be small in size and concentrated in meters N3-4/E47. Further clearing will be necessary to more closely define the position of these rocks and their possible relationship to the rocks in meters N5-6/E47. The soil around the rocks was medium to light brown in color and contained many small roots. Only two pieces of worn impasto
and five small pieces of worn tile were discovered during clearing.
P.M.
The area among and aroun the rocks in meters N3-4/E47-48 was cleared down with mestaline and brushes. Further clearing revealed the majority of rocks to be concentrated along the western half of meters N3-4/E47. Only a few rocks have been uncovered thus far in the eastern half of meters N3-4/E47 and hardly any further to the east in meters N3-4/E48. In addition, the area has not yet been sufficiently cleared in order to determine whether the rocks in meter N3.4/E47 represent the southern extension of those in meters N5-6/E47, or, instead, constitute a separate formation.
The soil around the rocks in meters N3-4/E47 was dark to medium brown in color, becoming increasing lighter as one moved to the east into meters N3-4/E48. In addition, the soil contained sporadic pockets of a while clay-like material and few small carbon chunks. Five small pieces of impasto pottery and two worn pieces of tile were discovered in the darker soil among the rocks. Two seeds were also found.
