The slope of Poggio Civitate in this area of the North Terrace, as excavated, is composed of five layers, beginning at the surface of the foundation wall of the northern extension building and extending to the bottom of the fossa.

Layer 1: Humus accumulation running the entire length vertically down the slope of Civitate.  Thickness: between 25 and 50 cm.   Contents: occasional tile frags, modern material such as a German machine gun bullet.

Layer 2: Dark brown soil running below layer 1.  Thickness: 5-10 cm.  Contents: negligible.

Layer 3:  Medium brown soil and stone pack with large rocks intermixed.  Runs from beside the north foundation wall of the N. Ext. building to the end of grid G.  Approx. one meter thick.  Contents: coarseware sherds, a terracotta statue ear, antefix head, large yellow impasto utility jug.  Finds rest predominantly against the galestra of layer 5.

Layer 4: Heavy stone fill, loosely packed with numerous air cavities and thick calcite deposits.  One meter deep, two and a half meters wide (grids EFG).  Contents: frieze placque frags.  Some pieces of the Yellow Impasto Utility jug of layer 3.

Layer 5: Bedrock and galestra running the vertical length of the slope and dropping beneath the fossa.
