Cut 2 was continued in P-Q-R 30-32, again encountering a dark brown soil with a few pieces of heavily weathered and irregularly-shaped tiles, but no pottery whatesoever.
Cut 4 was carried out in grids C-B- 30-32 and E-F-G 30-32, lowering the level of the trench to 70cm. [as opposed to cut in previously excavated grids A-B 30-32, ca. 35cm.].
The same yellowish soil with white particles was found which had occurred previously in A-B 30-32. from this level came a few fragments of pottery, primarily impasto and coarse ware, including pithos pieces, and some red ware but only a half dozen or so examples of bucchero. Tile fragments were extremely common, mostly pan tiles and 3 large pieces of ridge pole tile [G32, E32 two pieces]. This yellow stratum also contained in 30C a statue fragment (find no. 1), i.e. perhaps a leg from a running figure or animal akroteria (hollow, tubular terracotta). A series of lare rocks running N-S from B32 into C32, first apparent in cut 3 (yellowish gray sol), were found to have no regularity, continuance or architectural function and were removed.
As of this point, the majority of finds, particulary fragments of fine bucchero, come from grids A 30-32, the area closest to the wall.
- Find #1
- C30
-
Tubular, hollow, statue fragment, one end tapering with attachment scar
- Note: in storage, "statue fragments, tubular sections"
There appears to be additional tile or portions of this same statue fragment directly underneath it. It was decided, however, to leave whatever pieces these might be and remove them during the next cut.
These turned out to be pan tile fragments.
