Trench: D.10
Date: June 12, 2005
The bottom of the pit L.11 has been found today at the depth of 586.73 m. As mentioned in yesterday’s notes that this pit partially cut into the pit L.3 in the NW. The pebble surface to the SW of the pit L.11 turned out to be NOT associated with the cobbles in pit L.3. I cleaned the W section and I am convinced that they are disconnected with pit L.3 by some ashy soil context. In addition, the pebbles are sealed with very fine clayey soil on top, which may imply some kind of surfacing on top of these pebbles. This feature also abuts the W wall L.10 that the room and the pebbles outside of it may be associated. Unfortunately, there is not enough space to test this hypothesis too. The locus number of the pebble concentration is 16.
The W side of the N baulk turned into a wall at the depth of 588.41-588.32m. The bricks began appearing yesterday, turned out to be a wall (L.14). However, this wall (L.14) seems to be on top of the room L.7 and they may not be connected. The actual N wall for the room L.7 may still be under wall L.14. The possible N wall of the room might be in the E side of the baulk where the quality of preservation is really weak. At this side of the baulk, we (maybe Jonathan) will try to find such a wall and articulate it to see it relationship with the E wall L.9. Further excavations inside the room L.7 showed that the room was a small one, which may be called as a cell-room because more rows of mud-bricks appeared within the room area. There are two rows of bricks at N that they may be the inner part of the N wall of the room. Since the baulk has not been excavated yet, it is not safe to sat that those bricks with E-W direction are part of the N wall. There are also two rows of bricks going along with the E wall L.9 within the E side of the room. Again, it is not so clear yet that they are the inner rows of the E wall L.9. If those bricks are really the N and E wall of the room, then the room L.7 becomes a small cell almost completely destroyed by the pit L.11. If the E wall L.9 is only consisting of one row of bricks, such as the E wall L.9 in June 11th plan, may be the brick rows at N and E are only mud-brick pavement made inside the room. Accordingly, the size of the room becomes larger and the E wall consists of one row of brick and the N wall might still be awating to be discovered inside the N baulk. In order to be safe during the excavations, and assuming that the first possibility is the case, I gave a new locus 17 to the bricks at N of the room. As a result, we have to excavate the N baulk carefully and find the N wall of this room so that the meaning of the new brick found inside the room space and the size of the room will become clear. Only after that, the possible relationship the room L.7 with the southernmost room in trench D.8 will become clear.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
