A.M.

Work began at the NE area of K/91 - 92 lowering the cut to about 30 - 35 cm (See p. 61 re SE end).  The soil at this end was generally looser and dryer than that of M/91 - 92 which was shadier.  Large amounts of terracotta (about 1/2 c.) and some plaster (about 1/2 c.) came from mostly the lower portion of the cut which was still quite damp.  From this cut (about .5 m x 2 m x .3 m in depth) also came about 1 box of mixed pottery including much of a profile of a small fine greyware chalice.  Among fragments of pan, covertile and pithos (including a base fragment) was also a large fragment of ridgepole (covertile?) with 2 attachments for a griffin akroterion.  A second piece which may show an attachment scar also was found.  The soil showed occasional carbon but little disintegrated plaster, remaining quite heavy and brown throughout.

A topsoil cut was completed in the half-meter remaining of K/88 - 90.  A full casssetta of tile was removed, 1/2 cassetta of plaster and numerous pithos fragments.  Almost a full box of mixed pottery including fine ware was also found.  Stratigraphically the area borders on a previous modern plaster and terracotta dump.  Dark brown, rooty topsoil is found underneath about 5 - 15 cm of terracotta and plaster (mostly disintegrated making the dump soil loose, grainy, and yellowish).

In L/85 the rock and tile concentration was cleared down for photographing.  Afterwards, work began lifting

the rocks and tiles in orfer to bring the whole area down to trench floor level and to further define those meters just outside of the building.  About  1/2 cassetta of mixed tile and plaster was removed as well as 1 box of bone, some of it burned.  Very little pottery was recovered.  Much of the bone came from a heavy black burn area on the border of 88/89 as did the ivory triangle.  A heavy layer of plaster was found just above and surrounding this layer at 55 - 60 cm in depth.

Further cleaning of the stump from PQ/71 - 73 produced continuing small amounts of bronze flakes, bone and large amounts of disintegrated plaster with some tile.  A few flecks of carbon were also found.

In UV/54 - 58 the rock concentration and entire area was more clearly defined for photographing.  The large rocks appeared to rest on a 38 - 40 cm layer of brownish soil but were left for further cleaning.  To the east on a level about flush with the backfilled floor of T-25 (about 57 - 60 cm) in UV/56 - 57 were found tiles and a reddish plaster layer protruding up.  Small amounts of bone pottery and bronze were found here.

P.M.

UV/56 - 57 continued to be cleared in the plaster layer.  Stratigraphy is roughly large rocks over a thick brown soil (40 cm) stratum over a tile and heavy plater stratum such as has been found above "true" floor level in many areas as well as the outside of the building.  A few fragments of tile were taken p as well as a small amount of pottery and bone.  A rock and small flecks of carbon were also in evidence.

In K/88 to 90 a second cut was complexed to about 50 cm below surface level.  The soil was fairly uniformly brown and rooty with some small rocks.  About 3/4 cassetta of tile and only a few plaster pieces were founf.  Almost a full box of mixed pottery was recovered from here as well as a small spindlewhorl.

L/85 continued to be brought down to "true" floor level in this area.  In addition to the black burn area heavy plaster concentration was also in evidence.  Between morning and afternoon shifts 1 box of pottery and 1 box of bone were collected, some of them burned.  Tile and plaster pieces were few in the afternoon.  To more fully visualize the relationship of this layer, which also included small stones as did similar areas along the outskirts of the building, backfill and virgin soil were begun to be removed from the true floor in L/86 moving north towards L/85.
