Daily Journal.
Started the day by redoing the last measurements and draw them onto the new day plan format for this trench. While this was being done the trench was being swept, getting it ready for the days work.
Created two new cleaning loci, labeled L2126 and L2127.
L2126 is (was) the dirt lying as a small top at southern end of the mudbrick area, located in the southwest central part of the trench. This locus was originally a part of L2086. Its removal was because of the need for a somewhat level area, so we could continue our scraping for mudbrick in L2122, this would mean that L2122 would be extended under L2126.
As we excavated the small area we uncovered a good size carbon sample, labeled KT 4, as well as the usual finds of pottery labeled KT 1, animal bones KT 3. There were no lithic finds so bag numbered KT 2 was removed.
L2127 was the next locus to be excavated. It was an outcropping or chunk of dirt that had earlier been part of the south baulk. Now it was situated between the new south baulk and the wall L2117, which was removed as L2120. The outcropping had a triangular shape. It was removed to straighten the south baulk. Among the dirt and cobbles excavated were several pieces of oven debris, they were labeled as KT 4. Besides the oven pieces, dirt and stones, were also pottery KT 1, lithics KT 2 and animal bones KT 3.
After the removal of that chunk of dirt, we started to work on the circular shape of slightly lighter soil along the east baulk, almost in the southeast corner of the trench.
This area was identified as a pit and was labeled L2128. It is first we have seen so clear in that area, which makes me hope that we have caught the top of the pit.
As we started to work at the pit, I made three KT’s in advance: pottery KT 1, lithics KT 2 and animal bones KT 3. Soon after we started we found a small piece of corroded cobber KT 5. Two carbon samples were taken and labeled KT 4 and KT 8, bits of shell KT 6, and what was thought to be an object KT 7, turned out to be just a piece of bone disapointing! Also found two pieces of possible slag, labeled as KT 9 and KT 10.
After clearing the first 5cm off the pit, the soil seemed to be more fresh, making the color 7.5 YR 4/3 instead of 10 YR 7/2. From the next 5cm I took a soil sample for floatation labeled KT 12. Also found a strange thing that might be a bit of something, labeled KT 11.
The pit will be, and have been, excavated in arbitrary 5cm layers, because of the risk of drilling through the bottom.

Has note | The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data. |
