Daily Log

July 8, 2005

Began the day by scraping and brushing the trench in preparation for opening locus 2.  The tan-orange soil continues within the U of the rock formation.  It may be organic material.  We next took closing elevations for locus 1.

  • -89, -19   1.35 meters below datum
  • -84, -19   1.49 m./b.d.
  • -84, -24   1.14 m./b.d.
  • -89, -24   .86 m./b.d.
  • -85, -21   1.32 m./b.d.

There were not enough significant changes in the top plan of the trench to necessitate another drawing.

I next declared locus 2 open.  Locus 2 consists of hard-packed grey clay soil.  Locus 2 extends from the interior of the U-shaped rock formation to the western baulk moving in a northeastern direction.  Because of the potentially sensitive context of locus 2 all pottery found will be recorded as special finds and levels and coordinates will be recorded.

Top Plan of Locus 2

After further investigation, the slightly discolored tan-orange soil initially examined during the excavation of locus one was determined to be organic and probably root rot and was therefore removed with the other locus 2 soil.

Locus 2 opening elevations:

  • -84, -20.64            1.38 meters below datum
  • -85.12, -21.52       1.26 m./b.d.
  • -85.64, -22.15       1.14 m./b.d.
  • -86.67, -21.54       1.10 m./b.d.
  • -85.80, -20.55       1.26 m./b.d.
  • -85, -20                1.43 m./b.d.
  • -84, -19                1.49 m./b.d.

We completed one pass in locus 2 with baulk hammers and trowels before the end of the day.

Closing Elevations:

  • -84, -20.64            1.38 meters below datum
  • -85.12, -21.52       1.26 m./b.d.
  • -85.64, -22.15
  • -86.67, -21.54
  • -85.80, -20.55
  • -85, -20
  • -84, -19
