Daily Trench Journal

Area D

Trench 5

July 2, 2002

First day of excavations this season. Trench was previously cleaned on June 30. Off-season damage to the trench was mostly minimal, with the most notable changes being the degradation of the mudbrick structure in the S of the trench and erosion of the baulks, which required some cutting back, in particular the W baulk, which, being 3m high, is a slight collapse concern. Hence it is now cut back somewhat and stepped (~20-35 cm) at the top. Interestingly, the baulk cutting revealed some apparent surfaces and other features in the first meter of the baulk, some of which will be encountered by D4 later this season and other more northerly ones which could warrant the opening of a new trench to investigate.

Focus today was on getting the N portion of the trench down to the same levels as the S (where the mudbrick structure is located). L5078 was opened in the NE quadrant of the trench, the highest (save the top of the mudbrick walls) location in the trench at the time. It was cut down ~ 8 cm before encountering a possible surface layer (intermittent pebble surface?) with a pair of pottery pedestals (left in situ) and an obsidian blade (KT 5483) being uncovered. Below the loci were two pits (L5082 and L5083) and a rodent burrow (L5081). The first pit was actually quite deep and filled with ash and several carbonized seeds were encountered (seeds KT 5493, float KT 5497). The latter was shallow and virtually empty. The surface(?) will be given L5084.

In the central-W portion of the trench, a small portion (~ 5 cm) was shaved off the current level, instantly revealing a surface with flat-lying pot sherds (one of which was taken was a black-on-white painted rim portion, in KT 5480), and several obsidian blade fragments (KT 5482, 5486, 5487, 5488). Designated L5079, it also coughed up some carbonized grain and bi-valve shells (KT 5489 and 5498). Two float samples (KT 5490 and 5491) were taken before excavation was stopped to wait for a sieve to arrive at the site (tomorrow hopefully).

A sample of an ashy area abutting the mudbrick structure (L5080) was taken to be tested by the metals people, at their request (KT 5481).

It should be noted that the two apparent surfaces are at different levels and may well be revealed to be sequential, with L5084 being the later deposit.

Plans for tomorrow include continued exposure of the surfaces, with sieving of L5079 and rectifying the no shades situation.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
