Final day of excavation for CB 32.  We began the morning by scraping with trowels searching for the bottom of the lens.  The galestra layer on which it rested was quickly uncovered, through approximately 1/2 cm of earth.  The lens itself appeared to be much more shallow than we had hoped.  However, this is shallow in the context of a modern soil level, so we can not be completely sure of the depth of the lens.  In our terms, the center of the lends was 167.1 cm.  Most material had been removed yesterday, so approximately 8 fragments of pottery and a few bone fragments were left.

After cleaning the lens, the decision was made to proceed with the pickaxe and bring the lens area down to the section that the 1996 excavation had.  The soil was galestra and a powdery tan.  No material was recovered.  The area was cleaned and final depths are as follows:

35.12S, 77.84W                      190.5cm

35.20S, 77.48W                      189.5cm

34.79S, 77.70W                       177.6cm (on bedrock)

34.49S, 77.48W                       170.3cm (on bedrock)

Center                                      185.9cm (on bedrock)

As can be seen, the area under the lens rested mostly on a shelf of sloping bedrock.  however, the lens itself did not go as deep, but rested against the shelf on its eastern most arc.
