AM
This morning, we extended a 1x1 meter area to the west of the trench in order to see if the tile concentration could be followed (see diagram for plan of trench). Using a 5 meter tape measure, we drew two points off of the 276S line and the 277S line to make points 276S, 280E and 277S, 280E. Once these points were established, we removed the brush and organic material from the meter. We took several surface measurements and defined the topsoil layer as locus 4. We took a 10cm cut into the area and cleaned the meter. Then another 10cm cut was taken and when the floor was scraped and leveled, a new locus was defined. Locus 5 is characteristically medium brown/yellowish soil with small white stone particulates throughout. For more information on locus 4 and 5 see the locus discussion at the end of the day. We took a 10-12cm cut into locus 5 and sorted the dirt and leveled the floor. It is interesting to note that very little carbon has been found in this meter. A large fragment of covertile was recovered but it came from the baulk wall so could not be left in situ. Several other fragments are now visible in the northern baulk wall of this meter and
appear to be along the same ling of terracotta tiles. We may extend the trench 1 meter to the north to see if these tiles do in fact continue the line as they suggest.
PM
We decided to level locus 5 with the rest of the trench. When this was completed, no soil change could be seen in the floor of the trench or near the tiles. Then we decided to extend the trench one meter to the west. We pulled a line from the 276S line and the 278S line to plot points 276S, 276E and 278S, 276E. We hope to find a continuation of tile in this area or some suggestion as to what this tile formation is. We cleaned the area of brush and organic material and then took a 10cm cut into locus 6 after defining the area with surface measurements. By the end of the day, we leveled the cut and cleaned the area of the trench for photographs in the morning. Locus 4 produced 1/2 latte box of terracotta and four fragments of impasto pottery. Locus 5 produced 11 fragments of impasto and coarseware fragments and 1/2 latte box of terracotta. Of special note is a covertile which is misformed. This locus also produced an impasto sherd with a ridge. Locus 6 produced only 1 fragment of orangeware pottery and 3 fragments of
terracotta.
