The second cut , to 20 cm below surface was extended to E-F/101 roughly. A three by tow meter rectangle on axis w/our baulk line (not the grid) has been completed to this level. See map p. 33 . This rectangle will be taken down completely to floor level before we move farther east.
A third cut to 30-35 cm below the northern baulk was begun in F-G/99. This cut seems to end at the depth at which M. Spencer encountered a compact yellow-grey soil. Large stones also exist at this level, that is at the bottom of this cut. We are roughly 20cm above the floor level of the S.E. building. The earth in this cut proper would correspond to the
that Spenser illustrates in her section drawing of this area. Definite stratigraphical identification however, is impossible at this early date
By noon over four square meters had been taken down to 30-35 cm. One full cassetta of tile was found throughout these meters. Very little plaster was found. One latte box of assorted types of pottery was found, mostly concentrated in meter G/99. ONe possible sling stone and one piece of bronze was also found. Tile pieces were generally very small and badly worn.

Due to the practical considerations the cut was extended into meters E/99-100. This squares up our trench w/ the grid system. Subsequent excavation will follow this line within the grid system. E/99 was taken down in consecutive cuts to roughly 30 cm below surface. At 20 cm below surface, a fragment of Banquet frieze was found (
). Soil in this cut was a rich brown w/scattered pieces of terracotta - roughly one cassetta of tile was found. 1/2 a latte box of assorted pottery was found. The afternoont was cut short due to rain.
