Rocks in locus 3 were cleared and cleaned with hands, trowels, and brushes in the area of 17 W + 16 W and 4 S. We then took measurements and depths of locus three. The measurements were as follows: length from east baulk to edge of locus-1 m 15 cm, width of locus from North baulk to edge of locus 90 cm, and depth of locus below datum taken from the middle of the locus were as follows- 116 cm below datum. The new locus was

then drawn in both the trench book- see previous page- and on the locus form and the new locus form was filled out. Then a new cut was taken in the area of 6 S and 17 + 16 W. This cut was undertaken to smooth out the contours of teh slope of the trench. Since this trench is being excavated preserving the natural slope of the hill, we cleared some soil to smooth the sloping contour of the hill. This cut was approximately 5 cm in depth. We then turned out attention to clearing the rocks from dirt in locus 2 to further define the area and to aid in drawing and measurements that were going to be taken that afternoon.

When we resumed work from lunch we began to work on removing the Southernmost of the two large stumps in the middle of the trench. This was partly successful and a large portion of the stump was removed. We then

took some measurements for locus 2. They were as follows- depth 92 cm (from center of locus), length from North baulk to end of locus- 1 m 90 cm, width from West baulk to edge of locus- 90 cm and length from one edge of locus to the other running N/S- 1 m 10 cm. We were preparing to draw the locus when work ended for the day due to rain. It was also decided today to extend the trench 1 m into the area of 3 South, 18 + 16 + 17 West. This will also be done tomorrow. This was decided so that we could explore more fully locus 3 and discern how far the rocks extend.

While excavating today the soil was consistant with all previous days remaining a steady dark brown. However, the farther down we did the less roots that are found. While excavating today we found 8 pieces of terracotta including two pan tile fragments with partially preserved flanges. No other finds were made in the trench.
