Along the eastern side of the trench (see profile on facing page) there appeared what may be the remains of a prehistoric hut. These remains consist of two pits of black earth (postholes?) above which runs a line of black earth containing a large amount of charcoal. This level of black earth (ca. 2 cm thick) is overlaid by a layer of orange-ish plaster (ca. 12-15 cm thick). The stratum including these layers produced a quantity of blackened pottery, bones, and iron slag (?). Some of the pottery fragments had slag adhering to them. Galestra appeared immediately below this stratum.

The section of the northern face of the trench (p. 58) shows how this area of black layer overlaid by orange-ish plaster continues for 75 cm. to the west of the trench's eatern edge with galestra immediately underneath. This profile also shows the the of tightly packed stones (as much as a metre thick) which remained in this area even after preliminary excavation by the steam shovel. Along the western edge of this rock layer (in the area labeled '\xe1') it became obvious that the profile had been disturbed by an exceptionally deep cut by the steam shovel. Most of the finds from B-H, 5-8 came out of this stone packed layer.

In connection with the profiles, it should be noted that the surface indicated is that prepared by the steam shovel.

An extension of the trench was made to include the area extending 4 metres north of the existing trench. This included the area in grid squares B-H, 9-12.
