Rectangle 11 Introduction

Rectangle 11 is an area approx. 2x9 meters in size, and is defined by the foundation of the upper building composed of the southern wall of Rec. 10 and the northern wall of Rec 12.  Earth mounds preserving the original (ore-excavation) level of the agger covering the Upper Building rest upon both of the walls at a distance of 5.5 meters from the end of the western foundation wall of the archaic complex.  The mounds rise to a height of 1 meter above the surface level of the Upper Building foundations.  Rectangle 11 has been divided into a co-ordinate system of 1 meter grids.  Running east to West: Grids A though I.  Running North to South: Grids 1 through 2.

Rectangle 11 was previously excavated to the level of the upper building foundation by M Berg (see M. Berg Book One 1966 p. 152)  The main intention of excavating Rec. 11 this season is to define the limit of the Lower Building foundations uncovered in Rec. 10 in the 1976 season.  (see m. Fullerton Book One, 1976, p.4-plan p.118.)

Measuremnts for Rec. 11 will be taken from the surface level of the Upper Building foundation with the exception of Mounds A & B which wil be measured from the top surface of the apper.

Mound B extends into the area of Rec. 10 finds from mound will be designated according to Fullerton's grid system for Rec. 10.  Mound A, however is incorporated into Rec 11 and grids E-F/3.
