D-L/77 was cleared of grass and plants in preparation for a topsoil cut, which began in meters H-I/77. The peninsula of land in I/78-81 will remain in place until a section profile is drawin in J/78-79. Topsoil will not
be removed from J-K/77 for that reason also. Topsoil was typical brown with stones and an occasional tile fragment.
K/78-79 and J/79 continue to be cleaned down with trowels. Tile and pithos fragments lie in a plaster-rich soil that includes lots of carbonized material. Relatively little pottery was found - 1/10 of a latte box. A few bone fragments were found. Two pieces of bronze.
The tree in H/78 was blown down by a strong wind - nothing and no one was hurt. The rock and tile pack in G-I/80-84 will be left in place. G-I/78-79 will be taken down.
P.M.
The stump of the tree was cleaned and produced only a few tile fragments.
Topsoil was removed from D-G/77. Very little tile and no pottery was found.
G-I was cleaned down particularly where the tree used to be. The day's work in this area produced one cassetta of tile. Less than 1/2 a latte box of pottery was found by day's end.
