A.M.

Work was continued lifting topsoil in K - N/91 - 92 to a depth of N 15 - 20 cm.  Soil was very dark and rooty with some badly worn tile (3/4 cassetta) and 1/4  cassetta of worn plaster.  There was some disentegrated plaster in the soil.  A couple of pieces of very worn pottery was also found.  In general, both topsoil and the soil underneath it were very wet and difficult to work with.  Some rain fell making the under-soil very sticky and clay-like.  A badly damaged rocchetto fragment was recovered.

In ( ) nearby to where the canopic head mold was found ( C.T. Book III p. 76 , B/56) a topsoil cut was made to 10 - 15 cm.  In general, the soil was brown and rooty with lots of small rocks.  A very few fragments of tile and worn plaster were removed with another few bits of worn pottery.  A large rock was deeply imbedded in U/54 - 55 and left.  Another few smaller rocks to the large rocks' east were also left in place despite being moveable in light of the continuing search for the corner of the south defensive wall.

A second cut about 20 cm deeper was begun in these meters but little done before noon.

Re: Grid system for T-25/T-26 cut

According to C. Tutt Book III ( drawing from Peck p. 13 - 14) the grids for this cut are WX/56 - 60.  According to A. Collins Book II 1984 ( drawing by M. Tobey from Peck; front cover ) the grids are U 54 - 58.  [See also C. Tutt Book I pp. 13 - 15 for an explanation of the T-25/T-26 grid differentiation]  Grid numeration will be according to that used throughout T-26 by M. Tobey and A. Collins.

P.M.

Work continued clearing down the 2nd cut in.  The soil was very heavy and clay-like from the rain which fell at noon.  Very little material was recovered from here -- all of it was very wet and fragile.  Work was slow.  The cut was finished with time spent clearing down around the rock concentration in U/54 - 55.  At least one large piece of tile  can be seen to be embedded in the rocks.  A small amount of burn material was also removed from within the rocks.

In K - OP/91 - 92 the topsoil cut was completed with the soil continuing to be dark, rooty, and very claylike.  Little material was recovered; again all of it was very wet and fragile.  The area partially excavated in 1985, meters MNOP/91 - 82 (where a rock and tile fall was discovered and left to be further excavated in 1986) was begun to be cleared of fill down to plastic.

Heavy rain in the evening.
