Civitate B16B
The trench was taken down 0.45m to galestra or bedrock.
Summary of Civitate B Test Trenches
A connected series of ten test trenches along on E-W axis, over the entire hill of Civitate B was completely. It should be noted that no trees were cut, and consequently the trenches do not form on single line. Most of the eastern part of the hill contained very scanty, mostly surface finds. This would seem to indicate that whatever building(s) there were, were on the western higher and flatter part of the hill (with the best commanding view) where a possible terrace wall (B14) with half a box of sherds was found. About 30 meters to the east of this wall was found another concentration of stones (B15 see Plan, p23 ), whose pattern
and purpose are somewhat unclear. Finds of vase sherds and tiles were heaviest and best preserved there. Most important of the finds were the feline water spout and a fragment of the horserace frieze indicating that not only was there a building(s) large enough to carry such decoration, but also that the decoration of such a building(s) followed the same plan is that of Tesoro. It is still necessary to continue testing the area to the south of the present series of trenches in further traces of habitation.
