Work commenced this morning in the eastern half of the trench. We used pick axes to break up the soil and shovels to remove it to a wheelbarrow for sorting. The concentration of small stones is decreasing throughout the trench. Vert little material culture is present, just some worn and pitted tile.

We began to excavate in the central meters of the trench. More bedrock emerged quickly and patches of soil that are yellow-grey in appearance. Very little material culture is present here,

Subsequently, we used a pick axe to break up soil in the eastern two meters of the trench. Three pick-passes were completed. Overall, very small quyantities of anthropogenic material are present in the trench. A handful of worn and abraided tile (less than 0.10m in size) was recovered. Additionally, two sherds of pottery were found. One sherd preserves a slip, suggesting it is medieval. A modern nail was also found.

A concentration of tiny/small stones continues to be present everywhere in the eastern half of the trench. These are loosely packed. Many small stones and larger roots are also present.

P.M.

In the afternoon we changed our methodology to using pick axes and picking up with shovels. We wanted to remove the topsoil with expediency in order to determine if there is any other evidence of ancient activity in the area. We continued to concentrate on the eastern two meters of the trench. Very quickly we found bedrock emerging.
