Introduction
In 1966 a series of five test trenches were opened in the area known as Civitate B (see TGI 1996 25-27 ). The presence of the fragments acted as catalysts for the opening of thirteen test trenches, CB6-19, by Penny Small in 1968( 1968). A great number of interesting artifacts were recovered including a frieze plaque fragment, cut out acroteria fragments, a feline water spout, and a large concentration of tile fragments which are suggestive of architecture.
The summer of 1991 yielded the discovery of a series of large stone structures, eventually thought to be cist tombs. Two of these formations were excavated by Tony Tuck and Nancy Winters in 1993 (see
). Unfortunately, the features did not produce much material, most importantly nothing diagnostic. The return to the CB area this year is prompted by the information previously noted, as well as the discovery of interesting geological anomalies discovered by a magnatometer arm of this cross-shaped trench, due to an interesting bowl fragment and the presence of "fatty soil" noted in 1996. Following this, a further exploration of the discoveries made by the magnatometer survery will be conducted.
