It was decided to limit preliminary excavation in the western portion of R14 to the south, where the area had been previously excivated by P. Small as Agger 9 extension (
). Her area of excavation was confined to an irregular triangle area along the interior of the south wall of R14 (see plan, p. (page number missing) ), inorder to create a section running east-west. Thus only the area of meters S27-29, E 136-138, which fall in the confines of the upperbuilding walls will be excavated at this time.A 5cm cut was taken in meters S27, E136-138 removing the grass and roots which have grown up in this area. This soil [2.5Y 5/3] a light olive brown, was designated as Locus 1. 18 fragments of warn ceramic and 2 of bone were recovered along with 25-27 small, worn fragments of terracotta (1-7 cm). Several stones, approximately 20-30cm were also exposed and left in situ.
Finished removing backfill fromn the northwest and southeast corners of R13 and the northern 1996 trench in meters E140-141, S19-22. Begun removing backfill in R15.
A datum point was reestablished at the same point as the 1996 datum for the Southern Flank area since hte metal pin which was used was still firmly in place in the tree stump. depths were then taken in the area of the unexcavated half od R14- the ground level was approximately 35cm b.d. , with the exception of the area of P. Small's excavation along the south wall which was approximately 64cm b.d.
It was deiced to re-use last year's dirt and tile dump, immediately northeast of R15, in the courtyard of the Upper Building.
