Began lowering the ara immediatly north of the Upper Building Wall, to the edge of the stone concentration; meters S28-29, E136-138. Although due to the confines of the foundations and stones these are all partial meters. The soil was medium brown, slightly yellowish, with a few sparadic flecks of carbon- this is designated as Locus 2 [brown].

The area was lowered about 8-10cm to approximately 72-73cm. A second cut was initiated from the east, into S28, E137. The soil remained consistant with that above and will be included in Locus 2. This work will be finished in the afternoon, and pottery and tile recovery will be recorded at that time.

Work continued in meter S27, E136, lowering the area to approximately 65cm b.d. The yellowish brown soil will continue to be designated as Locus 1. This souil rests on a more yellow and sandy soil immediatly below which will be designated as Locus 3 [2.5Y 7/4 pale yellow]. It should be noted that the distinction between these soils is not great, possibly due to the extreme

dryness  of the Locus 1 soil. No material was recovered from the thin layer of Locus 1, while 5 fragments of pottery and 4 of tile were recovered from Locus 3.

Grass and shrubs were cleared from the orientalizing foundations in R14 and immediatly to the north of R14.

Continued working meters E136-138, S28-29. It is hoped that by lowering this area the stone concentration to the immediate north can be more clearly defined and a determination as to whether the stones are regularly placed or not can be made. the medium brown carbon flecked soil, Locus 2, continued throughout the cut to the west but became much thinner and rested above a yellowish sandy soil in the western portion of S28-29, E137 and S28, E136 - this soil is designated as Locus 4 [5Y 6/3 pale olive]. The overall depth at the close of work in meters S28-29 E136-138 was approximately 77cm b.d. No trace of flooring was found in today's work but this is to be expected as the area is most probably above the orientalizing foundations.

The locus 2 soil produced 15 fragments of pottery and 40-45 fragments of tile (1-12cm in size).

The Locus 4 soil produced 3/4 of a latte box of pottery and bone - mostly bone of a medium sized animal, possibly a boar of pig due to a tusk found- this included mainly a jaw/teeth and rib bones. 35-40 fragments of tile (1-15cm in size), many were more substantial pieces, rather than small bits of terracotta.
