Introduction

During the 1991 field season, a baseline was established for creating a master grid for the site. In doing so, various irregular stone formations were discovered in the Civitate B area of the hill. The clearing and excavation of some of these formations indicated that they might have once served as tombs. (See TT Bk. 1).

During the 1992 and 1996 field seasons, excavation confirmed that at least two of these formations were archaic pit burials (See EN Bk. IV). While material evidence from the area is fairly scant due to looting, the shape of the rock formations, as well as the included material, was evidence enough that the rocks were not natural in nature.

During the 2005 season, two new rock formations were identified as possible burials based on the orientation of surface outcroppings. These trenches, CB-33 and -34, will be established over these formations with the hopes of better understanding burial form and custom during archaic habitation at the site.

Trench CB-33 will be established over the more pronounced of these formations. Due to the potentially sensitive context of the trench, excavation will proceed slowly and all special finds and pottery will be catalogued. Because of the size of the bedrock formation the trench will measure five meters on each side. The following points bound CB-33 on the master grid:

  • -89, -19
  • -84, -19
  • -84, -24
  • -89, -24
